The Rookie #25
April 16, 2007 _ Scott Sigler

Quentin has to deal with one more shocking personnel issue as the Krakens gear up for the big game against the Texas Earthlings. The Q also makes his first trip to Earth.

Howard V. Hendrix, Vice President of the Science Fiction Writers Association, thinks that people who give away content online are “web scabs” and “Pixel-stained Technopeasant Wretches.” To see a high-ranking member of SFWA actually reject the very stuff of Science Fiction itself is mind-numbingly stupid. As one might expect, I bust out a can of rant on his old ass.

all the rigt peopel hait you!

Aat

This guy Howard, dus he has 2 long teeth, a long nose, hairy fur, walks on all fours, preferrably when half the planet is deepfrozen? Go go, webpublishing!

mac

oh dear, Howard. way to sound like an old dinosaur. next, you’ll be saying that this new-fangled “television” will be the death of the noble art of the science fiction novel.

anybody else think that this sounded like some kinda resignation speech? it ought to be. time to make room for the young blood, eh Howard?

Don Marsh

He’s got it all wrong. You are a web whore. The distinction is not exactly a fine one. When’s the last time some girl who was giving it away was called a scab?

Matt(Australia)

I’m sitting there Sunday night thinking, surely Sigler wouldn’t delay number 25 *click* 24.5 downloads “aaghh crap” and being the junkie I am I wasn’t satisfied. *taps* but I listened anyway.. because well I’m a junkie and I blame you!

Took you long enough :p and no I don’t care about time zones, get back to work Sigler. *whip*

Totally unrelated note; Nicely done man, I love how the story is progressing. I was one of those people that thought he’d turn this off after those first 3 podcasts… silly me.

atle

you have made another happy junkie

with 200kB/s download speed I just need to get away from the office reel soon

Doug O

I am livid at that asshole’s comments. He just doesn’t get it does he? As I said in my comment on that blog, I smell the bitter scent of jealousy from mr Howard the Fuck.

SphinctOr

Howard Hendrix…Never heard of him. I guess his books sucked, or at least had minimal sales.

He should stick with breeding fish (fish hatchery manager). It’s obvious he does NOT know what he’s talking about. He’s also a PC-phobe…scared of all those wiki-cliki and “jerque-du-cercle” thingys. Howard, how can you claim to be associated with Science Fiction, when you’re obviously scared of it.

I guess he’s still mad that his brother Jimmy got all the publicity.

John (Tampa, FL)

Hawkaris

I’m looking forward to the Tier Four match-up between Michigan and Ohio State. You wouldn’t dare write your home state as the losers of that match, would you?

ikkyu

hey, Howard - you’re a sci-fi writer, right? and you’re ranting against someone… writing sci-fi? because he’s doing it in an innovative way, using, like, modern technology and stuff? plus, the guy seems to be doing it not just to make money (which seems to be your professed motivation for writing, no?), but also for the sheer joy of entertaining, informing and provoking thought and discussion? you don’t, from your rant, sound like much of an advocate for science fiction writers to me. maybe you should move into marketing. (actually, no - i think this Sigler dude has better ideas on that too, eh? maybe *that’s* what’s eating your ass?)

ever hear of King Canute? move your ass, old man - or get wet.

Brent Weichsel

I don’t understand what this guy has a proplem with. Im not gonna buy a book unless I know something about it and sorry I need more then just a review.

Your on the right track Scott Keep up the good work and pumping out those KILLER Rookie Episodes!

GO KRAKENS!

Jack H

Hmmmm….
Did anyone show him that Ancestor went to #7 overall?
Wait that would not count because that would require showing him a computer…I wonder how he connects the abacus to the net to send an email???

Terry

Scott,

I want to say congratulations on the book deal, I’m happy for your success.

As for the comments from the SFWA I agree with you. In publishing publicizing a book is left up to the author for the most part (with new authors). I think slamming someone for their successful methods is insane. I believe in beg, borrowing and stealing :); improve on the things others have done. I can only hope that my Podcast novel will lead to a publication deal. The other this is to consider that there are authors who are not looking for tradition publishing and are using Podcasting. They just don’t like the idea that they no longer control the fate of publishing.

Michael

On the one hand, Dr. Hendrix (and I respect Shetterly and so believe that this was indeed Hendrix speaking) is an established writer, and has had respectable sales. At the Houston Worldcon his autograph lines were of significant length. He’s no wannabe.

On the other hand, you’ll note that of the comments to his statement, virtually ALL of them distanced themselves from Hendrix in this matter. Vice-president or no (and he explicitly denied having any desire to go further up the ladder), he does not seem to represent the majority opinion of SFWA.

As for his concern about “the ongoing and increasing sublimation of the private space of consciousness into public netspace,” I’m not crazy about it either, but it is an emerging reality. It does not, however, inherently threaten the relationship between publisher and writer. Nor does podcasting a novel for free, as Dragon Moon’s increased sales demonstrate.

What do affect that relationship are (a) economics and (b) power. It was ever thus. The April Fool’s Day Massacre showed that “the times they are a-changin’” with respect to both … and thus we saw both the Junkies’ power play (hey, I was one of ‘em; go team! — but that’s what it was) and, evidently, the Entrenched Monoliths’ counter-play. The answer to change is not merely to protest the change. Rather, you either make proposals that will guide the change among viable lines (and yes, everyone will have to agree what “viable” means) or propose a different change that overtakes the first one.

The Rat Pack of Podcast Novels is indeed changing things. We’ll just have to see how the change can be handled.

My word. Sounds like one of the core values of science fiction, doesn’t it?

Steve T

Scott,

As a Libertarian I would wear the title Web Scab as a badge, but then I hate all union related activities. I’m sure coming from Detroit you disagree with that sentiment.

Politics aside, I think all online writers should develop some sort of Web Scab icon to put on their site and throw this back in Hendrix’s face.

And while I have never been to David Wellington’s site before I am going to read all of his online books. Everyone should in order to get his hit counts up and really irk Hendrix.

Really, I think Hendrix is just pissed that people were reading/listening to your novels before you signed a contract, whereas he dropped his pants and grabbed his ankles to get his deal.

The Drunken Gungan

Y’know, it just makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside when I see so-called traditional institutions get all shook up over things. Watching them go into panic mode just makes me sigh in contentment.

Now, I’ve got nothing against groups that want to help people out there with their chosen profession, but Hendrix’s comments to me sound less like a statement for so-called integrity of the art, and more like a whiny complaint that he’ll no longer be making as much money as he did before…OR…the fact that now he just might have to work a little bit harder to attract readers to his work.

This just makes me want to work harder to finish and podcast my own stuff, just to be counted amongst the many voices of the new en route to topple the establishment of the old. Thanks for the boost, Hendrix…

Michael

Sigler rules!!! A bonus episode and a good 25 minute episode in two weeks. You roxxors.

HwayHzrd

Just another person jealous that they didn’t think of something unique to get exposure for their work.

There are probably long lines of writers/poseurs/wannabes thinking “CRAP! Why didn’t I think of doing that?!” who now hate Scott with a purple passion.

Forget him, Scott, it’s long been a proven fact that the pioneers take the arrows.

Am I the only one that noticed that fellows resemblance to V. I. Lenin?

Oh, well … joke ‘em if they can’t take a f**k!

m4rk

wow what a douche anyone know this guys e mail address? ;)

Cisco Cividanes

All that I wanted to say about the ‘webscab’ thing has been said. So,after reading all of the comments and reactions from the man in question. After read into he “bandwith barrons” crack, and the “SF writers as a class” comment, I have only one thing to say to Mr Hendrix, a question actually.

Mr Hendrix, are you currently a card holding member of the Communist Party of the US? Because I am sure they could use a backwards thinking old guy like yourself to help keep the cause alive long after it should have died and blown away.

Snell D

Scott,
Man I am one of those whom people will have kiss your ass because you are the “Man” and have come though for us. The Rookie is a great story. Been following your podcast since day one. Even pissed off my “Ole” Lady by buying two of your books. Didn’t want any greasy hands on my copy. Extremely excited about your book deals. Can’t wait until I see one of those book converted to a made for TV movie. “Junkies Rule”

Enrico (talian)

Gee….hey Scott, listen I am an international key note speaker, I live in Italy and I have read (listened) all your books. You are actually a business case, a paradigm shifter, I have talked about what’s going on in the webcasting and podcasting industry at least at 10.000 people in the last 6 months….You are a living case of innovation….
keep up this kind of work and the revolution is set!
Screw this association guy….he’s old inside!

Laurens from Canadia

You have just proven that there is no need for DRM! Give people something good for free, and they will want it so much, they will want to own their own tangable copy of it. Junkies, You Bet! Nobody had to buy the book, but buy they did!

Now, if they would only wake up and remove DRM from the music industry, and I hear that EMI and some other labels are now swlling some stuff on iTunes, DRM free!

You can’t stop this thing! (thank god!)

Noize

What’s nutty to me is that most science fiction writers and fans have, to varying degrees, some futurist notions within them somewhere. Whether looking toward the future hopefully or with trepidation, keeping an eye on tomorrow and its possibilities would seem to be a prerequisite for effective sci-fi storytelling.

This Hendrix gent comes across as someone with an abject hatred for the future, or at least for new media.

It’s ironic, or perhaps apropos, that he references the Unabomber Ted Kaczinski, who was also anti-technology, anti-future and liked to wander around in the woods.

It’s amazing to me how the bastions of revolutionary progress want all revolving progressiveness to slam to a halt once they become the establishment. Jerque-du-Circle indeed.

Right now, my greatest aspiration is to become a pixel-stained, technopeasant wretch. If the alternative is to wander off into the forest of irrelevance, I’d rather get my technopeasant on, thanks very much.

Keep punching, Sigler. Time is not on the side of Howard Hendrix and folks who think like him; he is a neoluddite who is prepared for a world that no longer exists.

Nic

Fucken A Scott!you had to bring ohio state and michigan into this!! im an Ohio State fan so let them kick ass bitches!

Jan Karlsbjerg

Congrats on all of your success Scott, I know it’s hard earned.

I heard your interview on the This Week in Science podcast (www.twis.org) and heard you kick ass in yet another way when you discussed the research you had done into the biology science relevant for the Ancestor story.

By the way, I know that Cory Doctorow is a member of the science fiction writers’ association. If you need “a man on the inside”, he’d be an excellent candidate.

Oh, and don’t worry if they fuck with your book( deal)s away from you. Podshow already owns the books anyway, right? [Running for cover]

Cheers from Vancouver,

Hendrix is a sad, sad man. What the hell does “Pixel-Stained” even mean? Is that supposed to be derogatory? Because, as far as pixels go… I’m soaking in it (and loving every second). I’m also polygon-stained. What say ye now?! Such a sad, close-minded, self-terminating individual. Where would humanity be if everyone thought like him? Ah yes, we already have an example: The Dark Ages.

What a party that was.

Quote: Hendrix
“…This is my pushback. I’d rather be chopping wood for my woodstove, maintaining my own well, and working endlessly on our twelve acres of pines, oaks, and cedars than futzing with these electrons. And that, if you’ll excuse me, is exactly the hands-on work I’ll be doing after my term as SFWA vice president ends

Have a nice life.”

This is the biggest load of pretentious, arrogant crap I’ve ever heard. How dare the world make technical progress without his approval! Besides, I believe our beloved Howard is confusing the medium with the content. Whether you’re chopping wood, typing a book on his Royal typewriter, or writing on a laptop and publishing it on the internet, it’s ALL electrons. Or maybe he meant photons… in any case it’s all the same… but I digress. (some doctor!)

And, Scott? You’re a true pioneer. You’ve pulled yourself up by your own bootstraps, made something out of nothing, and have entertained thousands around the globe by ceaselessly self-educating, working your ass off and risking your own neck when you could have been selfishly chopping your own wood, maintaining your own well, and wasting your time working on 12 acres of god-knows-what. I’m afraid Howard is a victim of his own self-important ideals. Push back or roll over, we don’t care.

Have a nice life indeed, Dr. Hendrix.

Hahah! We all KNOW who’s gunna win there! Hail to the victors, baby. :)

Scott, you are on the forefront of a new business model. With apologies to “Field of Dreams”, I paraphrase:

If you give it away, they will buy!

seanyboy

You’re not the only person he pissed off.
Anyway, today (23rd April) is International Pixel-Stained Technopeasant Day.
